3D-printed sea monsters for Garibaldi Urban Orchestra

Eight large sea creatures, claws, tentacles and tails, 3D printed in CoreLight3D® recycled core for a public sound installation in Naples: 1–3 mm walls on an ultra-light lattice, 3–4 kg per figure, five hours of printing each.

Problem

For the interactive sound installation Garibaldi Urban Orchestra, in the underground amphitheatre of Piazza Garibaldi in Naples, eight large sea creatures — claws, tentacles, tails — had to be installed outdoors within days, house sensors and vibrate like acoustic instruments. With traditional methods they would have been heavy, slow and expensive.

Need

Large-scale scenic elements that one person can handle, weather-resistant, ready for painting, lighting and mapping, with cavities for wiring and sensors.

Solution

Eight sculptures (2 claws, 3 tentacles, 3 tails) 3D printed with the UL-LFAM system in CoreLight3D®, an expanded recycled thermoplastic core with a density of about 160 kg/m³: 1–3 mm walls supported by an ultra-light internal lattice. Print-ready 3D models were generated in minutes from concepts, sketches and prompts, thanks to Nugæ's integration of design and artificial intelligence.

Benefits

About 5 print hours per figure; a tail several metres long that weighs 3–4 kg; figures about 160 cm tall that can be lifted with one hand; up to 80% less material than conventional LFAM; corrugated surfaces that amplify and modulate sound, with a sensor on each figure that the public activates by touch.
